George Mount

George Mount, center, professor in civil and environmental engineering and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach (CEREO) helped to develop a satellite that measures carbon dioxide from space. He and other researchers from the Laboratory for Atmospheric Research (LAR) have received a three-year NASA grant to gather this data from satellites and use it to check and improve air quality forecasting in the Northwest. Dr. Mount and his colleagues use the satellite products to support AIRPACT: the Air Indicator Reporting for Public Access and Community Tracking Air Quality System, one of the first operating air quality forecast systems in the country.
Dr. Mount's research has led to better monitoring of air pollution from space, allowing researchers to get a "big picture" of where and how pollution moves through the atmosphere. His expertise includes understanding trace gas measurements in the troposphere and stratosphere; atmospheric spectroscopy; and spectroscopic instrumentation. Dr. Mount has worked with NASA and the Dutch government to help develop the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), which makes global measurements of pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, and sulfur dioxide. He is heavily involved in development of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, a new satellite project at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory with launch expected in January 2009. This new satellite will make highly accurate global measurements of carbon dioxide to identify sources and "sinks" of the greenhouse gas.
