Sustainable Design
The College of Engineering and Architecture has achieved national recognition for its programs in architecture, construction management, civil engineering, wood engineering, and materials discovery and processing. Now more than ever the college is building on its recognized strengths to become a leader in sustainable design—a center where research and design work together toward a sustainable outcome.
Professor Michael Wolcott spearheaded the effort to create the Institute for Sustainable Design, which received a $500,000
grant from Weyerhaeuser. The institute merges ongoing work in architecture, construction management, and civil and environmental engineering with the research expertise of the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory (WMEL) and the Interdisciplinary Design Institute to address the holistic design of sustainable communities. Research explores new processes and designs that result in a reduced energy and water footprint, equity across economic levels, and greater trust and shared vision by communities.
